Stone fruit are like delicious little health grenades, packed with vitamins and fiber, and the calories typically range from 40 -90 calories per serving (that’s it!). This makes stone fruit a healthy alternative too sugary treats or starchy snacks. So, how do you pick the fruit that’s right for you? Follow these simple steps and you too will be able to cherry-pick the perfect stone fruit.

Smell it – Yes, smelling a peach or nectarine is an easy way to tell if you’ve got a sweet one!

Get handsy – Despite being known for bruising easily, super hard fruit is not what you should be looking for. You want the fruit to give a little when you apply some pressure, and it should be a little heavy for its size.  Avoid getting overly ripe fruit, it tends to be pretty squishy, unless you are going to eat it right away, and even then, it can be a bit of a mess.

Check it out – Vibrant, saturated colors are key when picking the best stone fruit. For peaches and nectarines, look for fruit that has no green or wrinkly patches. Cherries should have fresh green stems and the fruit itself should have a deep red color. Apricots are actually better if they’re a little on the ugly side, ignore the blemishes and look for apricots that are plump and orange in hue. Plums are a bit unpredictable; we suggest asking to taste them before you buy.

If all you can find are stone fruit that are hard, don’t worry, put them in a closed paper bag for a day or two and they will be perfectly ripe!
